My book on #AI and job losses, The Lights in the Tunnel, is now available as a free download. (The download link is in my reply to this post.) Recent advances in #AI, such as DeepSeek R1, make it clear that ever more powerful artificial intelligence is destined to become commoditized, cheap and ubiquitous. It is inevitable that this machine intelligence will be directed toward automating jobs, and the impact of this may come much sooner and more suddenly than we expect. Given this, I am releasing a free version of my first book, which argues that AI will eventually lead to widespread job automation and technological unemployment, and that this will be a threat not just to individual livelihoods but to the economy as a whole. The Lights in the Tunnel: Automation, Accelerating Technology and the Economy of the Future was published in 2009 โ€” 16 years ago and 3 years before the first deep learning algorithms powered by Nvidia chips caught the world's attention by proving to be remarkably adept at identifying the objects in digital images. The book uses a thought experiment (or imaginary simulation) based on "lights in a tunnel" to speculate about the impact of widespread job automation on the economy and society. While the book was written in the context of technology as it existed in 2009, I believe it has proved to be quite prescient. For example, I wrote 16 years ago that "...Microsoft and hundreds of other software companies are actively seeking the next killer app โ€” something that will fully leverage the vastly increased computer power that will be available in the coming years and decades. I think that there are good reasons to believe that this next killer app is going to turn out to be artificial intelligence (AI). AI applications are highly compute intensive and will take full advantage of all the computational power that new processors can offer." More importantly, the thought experiment that I presented in 2009 is completely independent of the details of the technology and is clearly far more relevant to the world today than it was 16 years ago. I hope you will consider downloading the free book and giving it some thought. I believe the impact of AI of the job market may be one of the most critical forces that shape the future. The book proposes a solution that can lead to a future of abundance. Please consider sharing this post. The download link is in my reply to this post.

LeCun's JEPA has evolved into a vision-language model, with 1.6B parameters rivaling the 72B Qwen-VL. Instead of predicting words directly, the proposed VL-JEPA learns to predict the core "meaning" of a text in an abstract space, ignoring surface-level wording variations. This method outperforms standard token-based training with 50% fewer parameters. It beats models like CLIP & SigLIP2 on video classification/retrieval tasks and matches larger VLMs on VQA, while using a decoder only when needed to cut decoding ops by nearly 3x. ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท Another tragic evening in Lyon, France - holding on by a thread: A society buckling under the unbearable weight of free healthcare, paid parental leave, nine weeks of vacation, reliable public transport, and the extremist idea that citizens shouldnโ€™t live in constant fear of the state. Meanwhile elsewhere, real strength prevails. People enjoy the comforting simplicity of knowing exactly what theyโ€™re allowed to say, think, and post. Journalists experience the adrenaline rush of legal ambiguity. Critics win surprise travel packages to distant regions. Elections are streamlined, decisive, and emotionally undemanding. Back in Lyon, residents continue to suffer through tedious stability, supermarkets fully stocked, and the psychological toll of choosing between twenty kinds of bread, hundreds of different cheese and an unreasonable number of wines. No loyalty oaths. No compulsory patriotism. No nightly reminder that civilization is about to collapse any minute now. Experts warn that if this recklessness continues, Europeans may begin to believe that life can be predictable, safe, and quietly pleasant - without fear. A deeply dangerous precedent for strongman economies everywhere.

BREAKING: Pam Bondi vows to go after Obama and Biden for โ€œongoing criminal conspiracyโ€ of โ€œgovernment weaponizationโ€ against Trump. In a stunning escalation of Trump-era retribution attempts, Attorney General Pam Bondi has openly declared that the Department of Justice is now investigating what she calls a decade-long โ€œcriminal conspiracyโ€ by Democrats โ€” a claim so sweeping it would make a QAnon message board blush. According to Bondi, the DOJ is now probing supposed โ€œlawfareโ€ carried out under Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, alleging a vast, coordinated effort to โ€œweaponizeโ€ the justice system against Donald Trump and his allies. The irony? This announcement comes as the same administration aggressively uses federal power to pursue critics, journalists, and political opponents โ€” all while insisting theyโ€™re the victims. Bondiโ€™s comments, delivered to a friendly conservative outlet, frame routine law enforcement actions as part of a grand Democratic plot. She even suggested that investigations into Trump were never legitimate law enforcement efforts, but rather an ongoing โ€œcriminal conspiracyโ€ that conveniently justifies reopening old grievances and punishing perceived enemies. Even more alarming, Bondi and her allies appear to be laying the groundwork to bypass legal safeguards by branding past investigations as โ€œcontinuing crimes,โ€ a legal maneuver critics warn could be used to erase statutes of limitation and target political opponents indefinitely. This is not subtle. Itโ€™s a blueprint. By invoking shadowy โ€œweaponization,โ€ Bondi echoed talking points long pushed by Trump loyalists like Kash Patel, who have arguedโ€”without evidenceโ€”that institutions like the FBI and DOJ exist solely to protect Democrats and persecute conservatives. The message is clear: anyone who investigated Trump is now the real criminal. And while Bondi claims this crusade is about โ€œprotecting civil liberties,โ€ her own words suggest the opposite โ€” an administration eager to relitigate the past, rewrite reality, and use prosecutorial power as a political bludgeon. This isnโ€™t accountability. Itโ€™s retribution dressed up as reform. And in this new era, the rule of law isnโ€™t blind โ€” itโ€™s looking over its shoulder. Please like and share!

The narrative that we can't rely on nuclear because France had a single (1) bad year in 2022 feels so forced and tired. Look at the numbers from below site of the Fraunhofer Institute: France has had another excellent year exporting electricity to needy Germany and other places. Out of the 92 TWh of net exports, it went to: - Germany: 11.25 TWh - Switzerland: 19.94 TWh (which directly sent it to Germany, let's be real) - Belgium: 12.03 TWh - UK: 22.53 TWh - Italy: 26 TWh (them being a pioneer in nuclear exits). Nuclear France is truly a pillar of the European grid.

In 1940 Democratic senator Joseph C. Oโ€™Mahoney proposed a tax on robots. Unemployment was still high post Great Depression (14%+) which many partly blamed on automation. Robots werenโ€™t taxed, and by 1943 there were labor shortages. https://t.co/V8HfNx6BCh

Why would corporations like Amazon replace workers with robots? Pretty simple. Robots donโ€™t need a wage, health care, time off, sick leave, Social Security, Medicare or unemployment benefits. Maybe itโ€™s time to tax robots & use the revenue generated to help working families

Italy is making a comeback. Try visiting it in 2026 and see for yourself. As the world's 8th-largest economy and the EU's 3rd, its debt is stabilizing around 127% of GDP. New laws are simplifying investments and reducing bureaucracy to attract private capital. Once Europeโ€™s black sheep, Italy is now a success story. The tax exemption regimes are worth considering, and Southern Italy may be one of the best geoarbitrage plays right now.

I'm Italian. Everyone asks me about moving to Italy. Here's the truth: Italy isn't for everyone. But for four specific profiles, it can be one of the best moves in Europe. I left when it was written off as a sinking ship. The difference today isn't that things got easier, it's
