"text": "All standard compression, including normal PCA, just completely fails. This is because anything that is lossy at all is going to alter training dynamics since your destroying information flows in the model. Basically what we found is certain pathways of information flow are inherently very low rank. Not just in one model but in literally every transformer we looked at. By decomposing these out, fixing the high rank components and passing them around the model in a clever way, you can get massive compression without altering the training dynamics. It seems to be a side effect of a natural property emerging from this architecture.",
