I came to New Harmony for the failed utopia. I left thinking about the 143 libraries Indiana lost. Before Carnegie became America’s library man, Indiana had 144 Working Men’s Institutes across 89 counties. Built for mechanics, farmers, laborers, clerks, tradesmen. Only one survived. It’s still on the Wabash. 🧵
