Prompt them to role-play “I have a sense of justice” or “here’s my conception of the good,” and they deliver… because that’s what the training data rewards. Doesn’t magically turn the model into an actual agent with its own standpoint.\n\nGenerating polished political takes is one thing. True mutual justification, owning reasons, revising beliefs because you genuinely hold them? That’s something else entirely. We’re confusing the simulation for the real deal, projecting our own expectations onto autocomplete on steroids.\n\nAn AI system has no perspective from which to hold beliefs. It doesn't revise beliefs; it samples different regions of the probability landscape under different prompts.\n\nIt’s a classic category error. No matter how convincing the output, the underlying system is still code, not a being. Let’s not blur that line.\n\nZooming out for a second: this whole debate shows the problem with partial perspectives. Pure philosophy risks missing the full picture. We need psychology (how we anthropomorphise), machine learning (what transformers actually do), linguistics and semiotics (how meaning emerges from patterns), epistemology (what counts as knowledge vs simulation), plus maths and statistics (probabilistic generation, not intentional thought).\n\nOnly by pulling insights from all these angles can we avoid getting blindsided by one flashy viewpoint. The AI conversation is too important to leave to any single lens. Be aware of the current gaps in your argument.",
