These are signs of broken search.\n\nToday, we can optimize (or more accurately, game) sites for Google ranks because we know how their indexer works.\n\nI just searched for a service that does what my company does and failed to get many useful results, even though there are few competitors that really do the exact thing.\n\nIt showed how to bend big, well known products to kind of do it, badly.\n\nThat's a major problem because, for all their IQ and understanding, the LLMs are currently thwarted by the old-fashioned link/click popularity game.\n\nToday, LLMs should be able to find all the little niche tools that exactly do what the searcher is looking for.\n\nMy guess is that this failure is inertia on how best to do search (\"this is how we've always done it\"), or simply relying on legacy Google and Bing search APIs which are based on ideas from 20 years ago.\n\nThe legacy ranking is a network map, a road atlas which was reinforces big cities.\n\nBut if you visit a foreign country, much good stuff is to be found with local knowledge, getting out of the cities.\n\nRemember, we're going to be asking our rental car to take us to nice places off the beaten track. We'll be asking for advice from cobots. They need highly effective and context aware search, across more than just web pages.\n\nWe will ask it to find a plumber, either to fix something or to work for our little firm. A key test is whether it can headhunt.\n\nSomeone like me has a footprint all across the web of my interactions and technical capabilities and skills. Headhunters, who are non-technical, rarely care much or are especially smart, won't find me because they don't know what to look for or where!\n\nBut an AI should be able to find me.\n\nWe really need to use LLMs to kill off bullshit SEO gaming and do a much better job of finding the amazing little business who hasn't hired a raft of AI agents to write garbage that games her competitor's keywords, two articles a week, consistently forever, and guest blogged for backlinks.\n\nIt's an Innovator's Dilemma problem, so its unlikely to come from Google meddling with its golden goose.\n\nAll search needs to be agentic from today. It needs to come up with a plan to sniff out that truffle.",

I want the information I'm looking for fast, and I want to be able to ask questions. I don't want have to determine if this site has the answer or that one. Or if I have a follow up having to go back and search that question then look for a site that might have a good answer.\n\nIt's going to be a game changer as more people engage this way.",
